UPSC EXAM STRUCTURE

The UPSC exams are conducted in two phases. The UPSC-IAS prelims exam (Objective type) is conducted in the month of August every year.

The applicants are tested on two papers:

  • Paper 1 - General Studies
  • Paper 2 - Civil Services Aptitude Test

The UPSC IAS Mains (subjective type) are conducted in the month of December. The applicant will be tested on nine subjective papers and the personality test.

The written papers would include four papers on:

  • General Studies - 4 papers
  • English Paper - 1 paper
  • Language Paper- 1 paper
  • Essay - 1 paper
  • One Optional Subject - 2 papers

 

UPSC ELIGIBILITY

The eligibility for UPSC exam is based on the following parameters:

  • Nationality
  • Age
  • Education
  • Number of attempts


NATIONALITY:

For IAS and IPS exams only Indian nationals are eligible.

Eligibility for Other Nationalities:

  • For IAS and IPS: an Indian citizen.
  • For IRS: Indian origin but migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • For other services: Indian citizen, citizen of Nepal and Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

AGE

  • Minimum 21 years of age and Maximum of 32 years of age as on 1st August of the year of examination.
  • Upper limit relaxation is available for 3 years maximum.
  • OBC‚ and Defense Service personnel disabled in operation.
  • 5 years maximum: SC/ST, Domicile of J&K during 1980-1989 and ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECO/SSCO.
  • 10 years maximum: blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons.


EDUCATION

  • A degree from a Central, State or Deemed university.
  • A degree received through Correspondence Education or Distance Education.
  • A degree from an Open University.
  • A qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to either of the above.


NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS:

  • General Category - maximum 6 attempts.
  • OBC - maximum 9 attempts.
  • SC/ST - No limit.


UPSC EXAM INFORMATION

IAS Exam by UPSC is conducted in 3 phases:

  • Preliminary, Mains and Interview.
  • IAS prelims exam tests the candidates on 2 papers each of 2 hours duration and 200 marks each.
  • As IAS exam evaluation is based on negative marking, accounting for deduction of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.

For IAS prelims paper, a candidate has to write two papers:

  • Paper 1: General Studies syllabus for UPSC/IAS/CSE exam includes history, geography, polity, economics, IR & IS, ethics, integrity and aptitude science and technology and social issues.
  • Paper 2: CSAT -Civil Services Aptitude Test syllabus includes quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, data interpretation and decision making.


UPSC MAIN EXAM

UPSC Mains Examination are for those candidates who has qualified IAS prelims exams IAS mains examinations consists of nine papers out of which two papers are qualifying in nature and marks obtained in other seven papers decide the rank of the candidate.

  • Paper 1: General Studies syllabus for UPSC/IAS/CSE exam includes history, geography, polity, economics, IR & IS, ethics, integrity and aptitude science and technology and social issues.
  • Paper 2: CSAT -Civil Services Aptitude Test syllabus includes quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, data interpretation and decision making.

MAIN EXAM:

  • Paper A: Regional Language 300 marks.
  • Paper B: English 300 marks.
  • Paper 1: Essay 250 marks.
  • Paper 2, 3, 4, 5: GS 250 marks each.
  • Paper 6, 7: Optional 250 marks each.

CSAT
